To clear up a few items, you can get the double cab long bed with any trim except TRD-Offroad or TRD-Pro, so Base, SR5, TRD Sport, and Limited.

Note Base is not SR5, they are different. You can tell the base models by the black plastic fenders and front bumper, where as SR5 is painted. Just a wild guess, but with the regular cab gone I would bet some dealers don’t even stock base models anymore. I have a Base model Tacoma, it does not even come with intermittent windshield wipers, probably the most annoying thing on the truck. Luckily prior owner added cruise to mine.

My 2cents, Base omits some basic features you would probably want to add, Sr5 has those features, and TRD-Offroad has the rear E-locker. TRD-Sport and TRD-Limited are basically more bling, bigger wheels, and fancier gadgets, not my cup of tea but to each their own. TRD-Pro is factory lifted, extra skid plates, etcetera.

I guess I'm not that up with Tacoma's as I thought I was. I thought the SR5 was several steps above base. My wife couldn't tell me what model the Extension office uses...but I would imagine they are near the bottom of the barrel as far as option goes. Glad to see that Aardvarcus is more up to date on them, and can give a better breakdown on what is available and in what trim package.

I have a 2008 Taco, double cab, short bed, TRD offroad with Sport edition hood (HAD to have that scoop! lol)
I bought it new, when ordering i was told they only offered the 6 speed with 6 cyl engine in the X runner... which is extended cab only.
No 6 speed available in the 4 wheel drive was really weird to me..it would be def desirable offroad. you could get the 4 cyl truck with a 5 speed, but I have a few trailers to pull, sooo...
Recap: 4.0 6 cyl is auto only, unless you buy the little Xrunner. :/

not true, I have a 4.0 v6 SR5 and it's 6 speed, and it's not special order or anything. I've seen many v6 tacos with a 6 speed. I've seen it only in an extended cab or a double cab short bed (DCSB) and it's not offered in a double cab long bed (DCLB)

I think my 6speed taco has EPA estimates of 15/19 while the auto is 16/21
The 6speed is geared really short, at 70mpg I'm at 2500RPM
Here's the history of my fuel logs over a 6 year span

Six-Shooter (Toyota Tacoma) | Fuelly

I am a part of Tacomaworld.com and I've seen an auto's dash on the freeway and at 65mph I think it hovers @around 2000rpm or so

I would expect 18mpg-21mpg but then it all depends on how you drive the truck
