25

Seems like 25 HWY would be a no brainer.Any 'urban' driving would severely cut into that though.

I would be most worried about gearing. I am pretty ignorant on this, though. Have you checked fuelly? I would think there would be a couple out there in similar shoes.

I would also think a standard would be better, as you can hold the gear you want- vs an auto deciding what's "best."

Edit: http://www.fuelly.com/car/toyota/tacoma , yea, you can definitely do it, bar any altitude adjustments.

If you are getting a 2nd gen tacoma (which is the year you're looking at) if you're going for highway mpg go with the auto vs the manual. I know you already stated that but just wanted to say that the gearing in the 6speed is terrible for mpg. I have the 6speed and at 65mph I'm at 2500rpm where the autos are somewhere around 2100rpm.

I've wanted to change out the final gear ratio but I'm afraid about how it will affect the slower speeds

What dimension? The long bed is roughly 6' long, the short bed is roughly 5' long and there is about 40" between the wheel wells.

since you're getting the double cab you'll most likely get a short bed, i think only the sr5 models have a double cab long bed but I may be wrong

Pretty sure I have seen a bunch of double cab "long" bed Tacoma's before...not sure what trim model they are. University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension office uses them for rural offices, and I'm pretty sure they would get the cheapest model available vs the SR5. I'll have my wife double check when she gets off work (same parking lot).

base is the sr5, next priciest is the offroad package, then the most expensive is the sport package. I know you can't get a longbed in the offroad package.

I personally love my truck and am glad you're looking at a tacoma. I've had my truck since Jan '09 and It had only stranded me once (which was just a old battery) and I replaced the Throwout bearing. All I've done is regular maintenance and I've had no problems with my truck
