Even the base Accent comes with a 6-speed manual, at least here in the US. Pair that with a diesel, I bet 60 mpg would be easy.

Sure. Why not a Diesel Sonic like its European counterpart?

I think it's time to de-content some base models and look for mileage gains by carrying around less dead weight.
Many useless gadgets and interior trims could be actually deleted that they won't be really missed.

With that torque rating, it could move even an Impala decently...

Meh, the whole the is poorly designed, tiny back seat, over weight, stupidly soft suspension etc etc. Its mediocre in every way.

I am happy to see that there is finally a U.S. car company manufacturing a good (according to reviews) diesel passenger car. Not that I would buy one new (I don't buy any car new), but it would be nice to see a manual transmission.

Chevrolet revised their EPA mileage estimate for the Cruze Diesel from 42 mpg to 46 mpg. There you go.

I drove a Cruze ECO as a rental car on a recent trip, mostly highway, some city, and it only got 29.5mpg, so I will be curious to see how the diesel does on mileage. I also drove it like a normal person, not like most people drive rental cars

What was that Eco, a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic?

If it was rented within the US, then most likely an automatic...
