Personally I would consider the Prius a liftback. Yes, it has a hatch but the severe slope of the hatch limits the usability. It has a bit more volume than a sedan but the shape limits carrying rectangles like luggage or a dresser. The design is more about styling than utility.

Something like a VW Golf is what I think of when I think of a hatchback

Back in the day... had a pinto "hatchback" so possibly in some cases it's a marketing ploy

Seems like you follow the definition I used to read in magazines from Portugal when it was easier and cheaper to find imported magazines in Brazil.

Even though it may not be so roomy as a station-wagon with the same exterior size, the wider opening of the hatch is still easier to load bulkier items than in a sedan, even if the only way to carry some bulkier item is keeping the hatch open.

An example of fastback is the early Volkswagen Passat/Dasher, which was simultaneously available either with a hatch or a trunk lid

I guess you may regret almost as much as getting rid of some of the Kombis and Beetles you previously had. Maybe that was the last reliable Diesel car you may have ever driven...

My 2003 Jetta Wagon TDI was mechanically reliable. I sold it at 10 years / 245K miles with very little except for routine maintenance. At that time the interior was starting to fall apart but it still ran great and returned 50 mpg +. Sold it to a family friend and when I last saw his mother a few years ago it was still on the road and had double the miles.

The 1954 barn-door bus and the 1964 Type III Notchback would be first and second. The Dasher and Superbeetle (I still have) maybe tied for third.
