The rally spotlight would have the handle oriented to the passenger side, for use by the navigator.

Southern California custom cars in the 1950s had dual dummy Appleton spotlights. duckduckgo.com/?q=dummy+Appleton+spotlight

My parents had a 1955 Ford Country Squire station wagon that had this spotlight with rear view mirror.

Not sure about handle bias, since there are times you gotta stop driving and figure out what exactly your looking at. Yup that destroys your times, but that don't matter right now and you're looking at what appears to be a road disappearing....... the nav is really busy figuring out how to fix this and at this instant, because you need more focused movable light without repositioning the car.

Never participated in a rally, eh? Night time is kinda like riding a scooter downtown rush hour wearing a blindfold.

The only rally I've done was the economy rally organized by the Sports Car Club of Montreal -- the organizer liked economy, but REALLY liked speed.

Some of the route was on gravel roads he specifically picked because they were twisty and hilly, and the posted speed limit was ridiculously high.

I was driving a Mirage, and the stability control kept applying the brakes just as I got the car drifting or rotating nicely in a curve to preserve momentum/keep my speed up. I got into a fight with the computer: I kept shutting stability off, but it would come back on by default after every engine restart. Which of course you're doing regularly in an economy rally!

I had similar problems with a rented Volvo in Finland. I kept forgetting to turn off ESC when driving on dirt roads. Didn't the engineers realize someone would be drifting and hypermiling at the same time?

I don't remember having ever driven any vehicle with ESC on dirt roads. How noticeable its effect feels?
