402 original miles 2000 Chevy Metro 1.0 / 5 speed up for auction!

This is nuts:

It's a 402 original mile Metro currently up for auction on Bring A Trailer. The original owner bought it new & put it away to have a "new" fuel efficient car on hand in case he needed it!

He eventually bought a Tesla. No need for hoarding old ICE eco-cars any more!

Even crazier: the auction is at $18k USD as of this morning.

How far North of 11.8K do you think it will be in six days?
I figured it would hit 18K in the six days remaining. I expect you'll follow this, let us know how high it goes.

Of all the cars for sale that deserve a dedicated thread on EM, this is it!

Still at 18k, 2 days left.

Current high bidder is "Mymetro1171" = likely someone with the Metro hoarding gene.

From my perspective it's quite interesting to see these small economy cars growing in appreciation. On a sidenote, it does surprise me its engine still features a single-port injection and a distributor.

The cylinder head and injection dates back to 1989. Not much changed over the years. The block design is even older!

Which is good for the sake of keeping it simple. And even retaining the single-port injection instead of going MPFI, its torque output was not much worse than the downsleeved and destroked 1.0L 4-cyl Opel Family-1 fitted to the Brazilian Chevrolet Corsa, even after it got MPFI and a distributorless wasted-spark ignition.

sold for $18.2k. Nosebleed territory. Only makes sense if a museum bought it, but even then price was high.

A car which had been mostly underappreciated everywhere and everytime, fetching such a high price, is quite surprising. It was never actually meant to be an icon, unlike the Beetle which used to be surrounded by politics through most of its extended production runs in Mexico and Brazil for instance, and even in landyacht-happy America it's hard to find any good example of another successful car smaller than a Corolla from the same period being highlighted the same way the Beetle is on a worldwide basis.

I think the argument could be made that the Metro is a very minor cultural automotive icon mostly because it gets made fun of in some TV shows and movies. But its popularity relies on people liking it "ironically".

The guy who snapped up my 2000 Metro did it because he was hoping his many "car guy" friends would think it was hilarious.

Kind of like the AMC Pacer.
