Since you live in Canada, you might have access to the turbodiesel that came in the Discovery. The other thing is converting that thing to CNG or LPG, which will be a lot less expensive and complicated to do.

Yes, I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD, it replaced my 2008 Prius. Long story on that move, but the Liberty is great but quirky. Get on Lost (google "lost kj forum") and get into their CRD section, read their newb guide.

Great engines, the emissions equipment has issues, the torque converters dont last but there are work arounds for all the issues and they can be reliable little beasts. I'm looking at doubling my commute (from 100 to 200 miles a day) and just got on here for ideas.

my 1.9 tdi turns over at 2000 - 2050 rpm at 60 mph
The motor loves low rpm, its max torque is at reached at a low 1900 rpm's.
If a person wanted more power and less economy from their tdi they could put bigger injectors and a one size larger turbo for about a extra 100 hp and 100+ftlbs of torque. for a total of about 220+ hp and 275+ ft-lb of torque. My older 98 tdi which gets better mileage than the newer tdi's is rated at a lower output of 90 hp and 150 ft-lb torque stock.
My best so far is 75 imperial mpg @ 55on the hwy Port Alberni to Victoria & back.
The motors also come stock in 110 hp 130 hp 150 hp with a respective increase in their torques.
