You might mean distilled water. Some alcohol might be added to lower the freezing point too.

Aha! Yes, I missed that line... reading a little too quickly. But I wonder still how they plan the car to respond to drivers in dry or cool climates... or if they stamp on the go pedal a lot but hate AC. Winter? I guess the ECU could run things differently if there is no water to inject? Or there could be a way to add water.

Anyway, it's pretty damned clever, even if it seems to me to be something for a niche more than the mass market. I guess that's their goal.

I'd imagine they'd have a 'low water' light. If you run out of water, they'd really have to retard timing I would think to avoid knock.

I honestly can't see the A/C system providing that much water, but I could be wrong. Also, that fuel efficiency increase is really going to take a hard hit if you have to use the A/C to refill the water supply.

I'm sure climate control is always on when one drives a BMW. AC is used even in the winter to keep the windows from fogging. Just call it a de-humidifier.

I'd bet the ECU is set to prevent water injection in a number of scenarios long before there is significant risk of hydro-lock, much in the way Honda's lean burn system will not work if there is the CEL is on.

Yes, and even if the A/C is always-on, in an arid or semi-arid climate, like where I live, there will be less water to remove and therefore to inject. I would think they would want to offer an ability to add water somehow, like one might add windshield fluid. In fact, to reduce the likelihood somebody jus dumps tap water into the system, they could call it "BMW-Power-Water" and charge oodles of dollars for it. "Use only BMW 345p Special Water" could be printed on the cap... dealerships will love that.

If the natural humidity is low just leave a bucket with tap water inside, far cheaper than buying distilled water.

Retard ignition timing, increase the intake valve timing to lower the dynamic compression ratio (a VVT miracle), sure they know how to overcome it.
