I cant stand how the term "back pressure" has crept into the car world and fear mongers people into not doing exhaust modifications. as long as you dont do 3" piping on anything under 600hp you'll be fine. 2.5" is pretty big in fact but its the aftermarket common.

And Mcrews, are you an airhead? My car has a headers back full exhaust system. Its a fairly common term to tell people that you have a complete exhaust system. Meaning exactly what randomfact314 said he had. Headers and aftermarket piping to an aftermarket muffler. Manifold back means the car still has the stock exhaust manifolds but has everything else. And NO you don't need catalytic converters to have a cat-back system. Its merely for reference against the stock formation. Google cat-back, what do you find? The rear most section of the exhaust system after the piping where the stock cats are welded into. My set up is long tube headers to an off road H-pipe to a Borla cat back system. Even Borla calls it a cat back system Stainless Steel Cat-Back

And to randomfact314, id change your exhaust closer to stock. Only because ive seen smaller engine cars loose power and efficiency. They gain with a new dyno tune but on the factory tune its hit of miss with more misses than hits. But you could probably keep the header. Long tube headers gain torque.

Wait........you said that, then you tell him to go back to stock?????????

1. A rice muffler is not a "cat back" unless you are making things up.
2. You refer to a borla. Key word "system" . not a rice muffler......

3. Headers and aftermarket piping to an aftermarket muffler. Manifold back means the car still has the stock exhaust manifolds but has everything else. And NO you don't need catalytic converters to have a cat-back
really? When you say "catback' it implies that the product is designed w/ the cat in place . A ricer muffler is not a catback......
I said "A "CAT BACK" exhaust is an aftermarket system that is designed to keep the catalitic converter in place."

Never said it HAS to be there. as you seem to think........

As you tried, and failed to explain, a cat back SYSTEM is something that is installed from the after the cat and replaces the rest of the exhaust system.

While you may have chosen to replace your maifold and you cat, you did in fact install an aftermarket 'cat back sysytem' (or did you just bolt a glasspack on the end)

FACT: a rice muffler is not a cat back.
Meaning exactly what randomfact314 said he had "HEADERS ALL THE WAY BACK TO A GAINT CATBACKyou clearly stated that what he has is a Headers and aftermarket piping to an aftermarket muffler.

WHAT??????? seems odd to me but your descrption of what he has seem to match my dscription a hell of a lot better than his!!!!!

then you tell him to go back to stock.........

'stupid is as stupid does'

but what it always goes to show.........

there is a reason we do a-b-a testing on this forum.

That's so ramdon phrases with no source or proof aren't accepted as facts

mcrews, your definitions of things do not match reality. Period. So arguing with you any more would be a serious waste of my time. You seem to have misconstrued some of my words but then agreed on what I was trying to say.

Fellas, take it easy.

Yes there was plenty in the original post that wasn't clear - at least not to me. Apparently it may be clear to some.

Let's go for clarification and understanding. Adding antagonism degrades the discussion.

I may have missed it - is the engine running a standard camshaft ?

If it is then the only change I would make to save cash would be to lose the bean can on the back, but that's just to make it more relaxing ride with less noise. The rest will not affect MPG significantly depending on your driving style.

Sorry guys.... I went back and re-worded the whole thing in hopes that the post is a little more understandable for everyone. Maybe it will clear things up a little.

hummmmm..........

What to say..........................

Facts and words.

Maybe.........'WORDS HAVE MEANINGS"
When you don't use words correctly you show a lack of understanding of the english language.

and when you drive a ford mustang.............oh well.
Stupid is as stupid does.

Again, let me state.
If you, the op REALLY give a crap about mpg, you wouldn't post some lame poll to figure uot what to do.
There really is a bit of science to this.
I realize that the 'boy racer' in everybody wants to bolt on headers but as this forum has proven, time and time again,
A-B -A
All the op wants to do is sit at his desk.
Probably hasn't even googled anyting else.
how about giving us some NUMBERS?????
Size of the pipe. mpg. I don't know. come on, help yourself just a little bit.

If I sound pissed, goood guess.
1. lame discription
2. lamer suggestions w/ no facts
3. try to get clarity
4. ford owner defends failed attempt at proper use of words
5. more from ford owner
6. op thanks ford owner
7. op finally admits.......oh gee......maybe i was wrong
8. wtf

Everyone please take some deep breaths and walk round the block. Not sure if its the weather, or sun spots or whatever - but everyone (me included) seems very grumpy at the moment.

At least none of us are this bloke

Except if you are of course.

EDIT - this is meant as a tension breaking joke BTW.
