Hmm...dunno about my whole roof, but maybe my sunroof....it takes up the greater portion of the surface area. Wonder if they make it semi-transparent? and how much "worse" semi-transparent is at deflecting heat?

You' want chrome tint. Illegal on windows in some places, but I don't think anywhere limits when you can do on a sun roof.

Comes in any colour you can imagine -solids, metallics, brushed, holographic, luminescent etc. White will be much less effective, but I understand chrome might not suit every situation.

I actually run custom shiny-aluminium window panels in summer on my Renault during summer. Makes a huge difference.
To make them, I took windshield-reflective-screens and cut them and mounted them on cardboard then sealed them with duct-tape. They'd clip into the rear windows to block out the heat. They'd unclip when not needed as well.
I got a temperature difference of 20-degrees c. Meaning that I can keep the interior under 30-degrees-celsius when the outside temperature is 47/48-degrees C. Yes it did get that hot last summer.
Just drove around like it wasn't even hot.

I see chrome tint in older vans converted from passenger to cargo, instead of replacing their windows with blind panels. When it comes to sunroof it's also no big deal, I'd be more concerned about the legality of a small chrome-tinted stripe at the top of certain "panoramic" windshields.

I do this too, I have silver sark curtains on my rear side windows, behind extremely dark (factory) tint on my Jeep.
Can't legally do it on the rear window though so I think the gains are fairly small, and only when the sun is at a low angle.
On the Prius I've got a window shade laying flat on the cargo blind. With a big near horizontal rear window that should make a fair bit of difference.

Cool.
It's not really summer here at the moment, but here we are allowed to do our back windows because we have side mirrors. There's some printed film that's expensive that you are allowed to use but it's a few hundred dollars.
You might be able to do it 'half-way', so it's half blocked but there's still a visible section.

Not sure if that's the same type of film, but I have already seen one that is used to turn the rear window into a mobile billboard from the outside, while still retaining most of the visibility from the inside. There were times when it seemed that nearly every taxi in my country had it...

I frequently see cars registered in Bolivia and Paraguay with some opaque vinyl or chrome-tint strips applied to the upper and lower edges of the windshields of their cars for that very same reason.

After reading this thread I'm thinking of painting the top of my S-10 with a reflective aluminum paint, and taking the one side of my window reflector and paint it black for winter heating.
That way I use the reflective side for summer, and the black side for winter to heat the truck up!
I'm also wanting to experiment with a paint product called nansulate that's supposed to give a r-11 insulation value with 3mils thick coating?!?

I wonder how much of a difference it makes compared to white paint.
Also, without an air gap below the newfound reflective barrier, won't conductive heat win in the end?
Vinyl is also apparently a PITA to remove, especially from surfaces hammered by UV. I wonder if Plasti Dip with Silver Metalizer would work well or be easier to remove?
