Remember also that max power in a diesel is generally lower than max rpm by a lot, perhaps 1/2 or more. These are engines that max at 2000 rpm, give or take. Was in a russian built bus in Gdansk and the tach was redlining at 1900 and it was upshifiting at 1400- 1500

If you look at the projected Dyno report, my 383 IS very close to a diesel's power bands.

Torque from1000 and good up to 3500.

Torque peak is 2000 but is fairy flat from 1500 with 399 and runs to 3000.

HP Peaks at 3500 both curves drop sharply at 4500.

The idea/concept is for the engine to LOVE running at 1500RPMs and to make the most power at 1500 and thus is also using the least fuel.

Lastly this would not work well with a carb. Carbs cannot meter fuel at such low RPMs and low air flow to draw out the fuel.

Only fuel injection can operate at low RPMs which has been shown in all tests.

It all comes together for my build.

I've read about diesel engines that can achieve up to 6,000RPM, so higher RPM in a diesel isn't impossible. I'd suspect the real reason is it goes well with it's instant torque characteristics. There's no wating for inrushing air to fill up the vacuum created by a throttle plate that is now open.

But generally lower RPM does help reduce friction, also helps keep the throttle open and can help make up for less than ideal induction and exhaust.

I drove a Chevy gas van the other day that would shift up and place the engine at 1,100RPM if I didn't put my foot into it.
