Not legal in most states and counties.

The type of woman I would be interested in would jump at the chance to go for a drive (with me) in a Ryland styled car (probably why I'm still single).

I'm just pointing out the nature and tendency of men and women to make decisions based on appealing to the opposite sex. This often involves displays of excess and rarely has anything to do with rational thought.

If people (remember, I speak in generalities) really thought EVs were cool, they would be paying a premium to drive them. When I visited Miami, I saw steady streams of Ferraris and Lamborghinis, but no EVs.

So I guess the most efficient EV would be the one that had a flock of mindless floozies following me around Miami, in Ferrari's and Lamborghini's.

Dang I missed my calling . My Aunt did offer to set me up as an escort once in Palm Beach, working out of her house.

Come to Santa Monica/West LA/Hollywood... and EV will get you women. That's why you see so many guys cruising Whole Foods parking lots in their Prius.

The looks are decent enough on the Tesla, sure. EVs will eventually appeal to a growing number of people, but in general, they project the image of either a nerd, or an environmental zealot. The Tesla projects the image of a wealthy nerd.

Whereas the type of woman I'd be interested in would a) have her own car (and maybe a truck & horse trailer too); and b) not be interested in driving unless it was to get someplace to do something interesting with me.

Yes, the Tesla S even in the 160 mile model will be expensive -- about $50,000 minus the $7500 tax credit, I think. But it will be one of the best (if not the best) performing sedan car in the world. So, if you compare it to similar performance sedans, I think it will look inexpensive.

How many $35,000 dollar cars can equal the Leaf for performance? (0-60 in ~7.2 seconds) Remember that a Leaf costs >$10,000 less to operate over 100K miles than a Versa, at today's gas prices. The Leaf is a bigger car than the Versa, that far outperforms it, too. And if you put solar panels on your roof, you save another $3,500/100k miles plus you pay half what you do now for electricity.

What will the price of gasoline be in 6 or 8 years? Will we have to fight any more wars to defend our oil supply? How much less carbon will we put in the atmosphere if we drive electric cars? How much cleaner will the air we all breathe be? How much oil will be spilled?

"Project image of this, project image of that"- what a bunch of isht. Nobody gives a horse's platoot about who drives what. When I see an exotic car/average car/beater, chances are very high I don't know who's in it, and I ain't gonna ever know either so whatever I might think of the owner means nothing. Most of the time- if it occurs to me to form an opinion of someone based on their car at all- it's pity, knowing they're working their butt off at some boring job to support that expensive vehicle.

Stupid people spending so much time and money trying to impress strangers they'll never meet...

And we're going to "need" more wars regardless of oil- can't have all those men and equipment sitting around doing nothing.

Exactly my point. You want a woman with an ET (electric truck), which doesn't exist yet.

So far our options are a very expensive and kinda cool EV (Tesla) or expensive and unexciting cars such as the Leaf.

Yes, all very nice things and I'm looking forward to the plethora of benefits my eventual electric car will bring, but the Leaf still has an image problem for most people.

Reducing oil consumption now will have virtually no impact on reducing overall carbon levels because the oil will eventually be consumed by someone else as long as the price is relatively cheap. The air I breath is quite clean though, so I expect I won't see any difference in the future.
