Most of the major problems I've heard have been boat related, eg people putting automotive gas in boat fuel tanks. But for automotive, I've heard of the occasional failed fuel pump, Neryls replaced the fuel pumps in his fleet, and up to 10% less MPG.

If it's factory approved for E10, odds are it'll be fine on E20.There isn't a huge difference in the composition once Ethanol is in the mixture. MPG will go down from less energy density, another -3% from E10, YMMV.

I heard about your state doing that but I thought they shelved the idea. Hmm. I wish Kentucky was more proactive about the blender pumps, myself. On the otherhand this year's drought means we'll be paying the same price per gallon for Ethanol as Gasoline, which is really my personal limit.

I saw 8% difference in mpg with E0 vs E10, but the E0 was 90 octane and about 10% MORE expensive than E10 93, which made it about 20% more than 87 E10, OR, not worth it dollar/mile wise. That was before even having to drive the 60 miles each way to get it!

I'd run it if the price was the same, and right around the corner....

I think what some of you are forgetting here is that ethanol is an octane booster. If you have a reasonably modern car with computer-controlled ignition timing &c (not to mention turbocharging), you should be able to get more power out of the gas because the engine can run at a higher effective compression.

...not according to the most current listing here:

Top Tier Gasoline

BP in USA is ARCO in most places.

double edged sword.

while ethanol can be used to boost the octane rating of a decent fuel into something that can be used in a heavily boosted vehicle, it also allows for a really crappy base fuel to be bumped up into the category of 87 octane.

guess what's cheaper to make?

OCTANE is a benefit if/when you can dynamically increase (ie: turbocharging) the engines' compression ratio so as to USE its higher knock resistance; otherwise, it's simply a GOOD thing that can NOT be used.

VVT can also be used to dynamically alter dynamic compression, though obviously not to the degree that a turbo/supercharger can.
