U.S. sales numbers
Just saw the answer to this question, by chance...
Quote:
Another question: this is more marketing-related, but Ford doesn't break down Fiesta sales by drivetrain (or even hatch/sedan) in its monthly numbers. I'd be interested to know how many of these they're moving in Canada/U.S.

Answer:

4-8 percent, depending on the month [...] since late December [despite only being] paired with a manual transmission
...
A little more than 1,000 customers have purchased a 1-liter, one-third of them in California., despite it only coming with a stick shift

For comparison, since December, Mitsubishi has sold on average around 1300 3-cylinder Mirages per month in the U.S.

I just noticed the article is up:
Driving Ford’s newest (and smallest) EcoBoost
New Fiesta uses 3/4 the usual cylinders to deliver 5/4 the performance

... And it answers the gearing question - thanks!
~2000 RPM at 100 km/h / 62 mph in top gear.
Quote:
drivers will find themselves frequently shifting into fourth to maintain speed. Another issue with the tall gearing is that drivers will have to downshift into third gear to get enough power to safely pass on a two-lane highway.
|
That's significantly taller than the Mirage 5-speed, which spins at ~2800 RPM at the same speed (at least in North America... Euro Mirages get a taller final drive, surprise, surprise).

New question! (Now that you've driven the car...)
Did you note the Fiesta's fuel consumption? Under what kind of driving conditions/speeds/techniques?

Hey guys the article IS up and linked and the car was really interesting. I also made a video which can be found here:
I tried to answer most of your questions in the article but I'll answer more things you asked here:
Are there any aero differences between the 3 cyl and the 4 cyl: Nope. No changes to the body at all for the EcoBoost engine.
Does the 3 cyl have different gearing thanthe 4 cyl: Yes it does! The engine comes with a five-speed manual only and first is very short, second through fourth feel normal and fifth is really REALLY tall.
Does the turbo engine have stop/start capability: No, and there are no plans for it as of yet. (No answer on if the UK version is the same but I believe not)
Any fuel economy gauges: If there are any, they were hidden too well for me to find them. i couldn't find a fuel economy readout in any form. So sadly, I'm unable to tell you more than that I burned a half tank of gas over the course of 5 hours of VERY hard driving.
What sales are projected for the three cyl: 20% of Fiestas are sold with manuals and Ford expects 75% of that 20% to be the EcoBoost three.
Does the engine use a dual mass flywheel: Yes and boy is it HEAVY. The revs take forever to fall because of it.
If you have any other questions on what it's like to drive, please let me know!

Thanks, Cletus!
If there's really no onboard MPG display, that's a big oversight on Ford's part.
Even the more basic Spark, Mirage and Micra trio have 'em.

Push the end of the signal switch in towards the base of the switch to toggle through the menu and hold the switch a couple of seconds to reset each mode. It does not have instant MPG but you can reset it and get it very close in a couple of seconds. I think max reading is 99.9. Its the same screen that has the odometer reading when you first key on the car.
To calculate idle fuel consumption coast in neutral with the engne running and keep resetting the MPG reading, when it drops below 99.9, that speed divided by 99.9 gives you the idle fuel consumption. I think it's around 17 MPH when mine drops below 99.9. It works out to .17 gph at idle for my 1.6.
Mine idles at the same RPM coasting in neutral or sitting still, but the 1.0 is only manual in the USA.
Mine is rated at 38 highway.

No mpg display, uhhhhh, wrong. Same place as the odometer reading, push in on the END of the turn signal stalk. It scrolls through.

As far as old tele man's post about them being optomistic, I have not seen that with mine, unless you let off the gas consciously or unconsciously when you are looking at the gauge cluster and fiddling with the switch.
