That may be true. But I also think though that drivers of thirsty vehicles will discount a 0.5 mpg difference (for example) as insignificant, when it actually is a significant change on a 10 mpg vehicle in terms of volume of fuel used.

I havent read through all the posts but heres my suggestions

Complete Aftermarket exhaust from headers back
Remove Antenna
Remove Roof Rack
Grill Block
More Aero Mirrors
Get a roll pan to replace the big steel bumper
Replace front bumper with fiberglass cover
Raise the engines compression ratio

I would say scratch everything above and start out by coasting to stops as much as possible, reduce your cruising speed on the highway and modify your driving habits overall BEFORE you do any of the above.

The list of hypermiling techniques is a good start.

90% of your improvements will be from driving technique not modifications.

Cheers
Ryan

(An unfortunate bump)

Thanks for all the advice everyone... found the easiest way to raise the economy.

Bought a different car. New job requires me to drive 100 miles daily... but I wanted a midsize sedan with a high safety rating (them deer!), so I bought a 2008 Mercury Milan I4.
