Volvo 850's drivetrain uses a lot of renault-based parts.

I just thought of this on my way home from Glamis (big sand dune, look it up). I would love to put prius guts in a sand rail. Should have the HP to push around the sand np, of course where to put the batteries would be a problem, but one could always forgo the batteries and just run straight gas. Would be way more fuel efficient than most rails out there.

You mean its driveline was similar to the most powerful versions of the Renault 21 and 1st-generation Renault Trafic? So it would end up requiring some redneck engineering to fit a transverse-oriented powertrain into it...

Volvo 850 is a transverse drivetrain already

And the gearbox has the renault-pattern (at least some engines)

But i think the largest challenge is to get the engine mounting to fit the Toyota driveline, especially for the drive axles so the car can turn

Then fitting the entire setup of the Prius (or from a Camry) would be a more sensible option instead of trying to couple the Volvo engine with the HSD.

That's most of the appeal. Putting Prius guts into a car that looks more like it's from the future is really appealing. I don't mind the Prius in any of its generations, but I'd still prefer its drivetrain in something more interesting to behold.

I started an EV 1969 Camaro, but it was parts from an EV supplier, a prius powered 69 camaro would probably top out at 30mph because of the weight

I never got to finish the project because someone offered me money for the car, he installed a LS1 engine, and it now gets about 28mpg. not bad for a 1969 car :P

That's the big change today. Instead of the costly proprietary parts you had available then, now the junkyards and distribution chain is full of OEM components.

With a car like that, the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive used in for instance the Toyota Highlander/Lexus RX400h would give you a Camaro with all-wheel drive and a 3.3 liter V-6.
