Mufflerectomy on rolling road (Audi TDI)

To satisfy my own curiousity, here's what happened when I tested a rear silencer delete on my Audi TDI. No remap done here, just removing the restriction in the exhaust by chopping it off.

I'm not sure if more power is a good thing for economy, but it's still a good thing.

But, what does the "Noise Abatement" crowd say about such things?

if the fuel economy is not affected and the sound not too loud I would consider doing it for weight saving and rear belly pan upgrade

I removed my muffler on my TDI as well, and added a straight pipe:

The turbo already reduces the sound a great deal on its own... without the muffler, I can hear more of the turbo whistle and a little more rumble, but a casual observer (not familiar with TDIs) wouldn't notice the lack of muffler. I didn't remove the muffler for FE or power purposes; I removed it because I really wanted to hear more of the turbo. Ya, I know, soft in the head & all that...

There are two other videos which may be of interest - a sound comparison, and a video of the internals of the muffler:

Since it provides a better exhaust flow and saves a few weight, it's a good measure for MPGs.

Turbo diesels aren't really all that loud when you go mufflerless. Unless you dump a three-inch exhaust on that bad-boy and pull off whatever particulate filter is on there...
