I would love to see a proper apple to Apple calculation. Use a diesel generator to charge a Tesla, and measure exactly how much fuel was used. Same car, same charger, round trips. Then compare it to a similar vehicle. But what is similar? The Tesla is very heavy because of its batteries. So would a diesel Passat be comparable?

2000 passat TDI used to get maybe 60 mpg (diesel), no dpf, just a cat, much better than a Golf. Fuel is crap nowadays, same car gets 45 mpg.

* Automotive Diesels are in the neighborhood of 42% Brake Thermal Efficiency ( BTE ), wasting 58% of the fuels energy right off the bat.
* A gallon of Diesel has been assigned an equivalence of 40.108-kWh electrical energy, so that would have fallen to 28.877-kWh leaving the shaft of the engine, and entering the alternator
* Alternators are very efficient. Allowing a 98% efficiency, a Tesla would 'see' 28.3-kWh coming at it, for each 40.108 kWh-e gallon of fuel burned.

The same era Golf is much more better-er at aero than the new Beetle, but I can get into and out of the Beetle and sit it far more superior-usly.
I'll keep paying the tall guy tax and drive on.
