Scooters have resorted to an unitary engine/transmission/swing-arm setup for decades, and the Vespa was actually meant to also perform acceptably on somewhat rough roads in post-war Italy. So maybe the hub-motors laying unsprung might not be so bad at all...

In-wheel suspension still sounds more unicorn-ish than hub-motors.

Electric motors keep getting more powerful and smaller. Maybe some day it will be feasible to put superconductor motors in the hubs that weigh a fraction of a copper wound motor yet produce much more torque and power.

This is a good thread because we have talked about scooters, cars and trucks. Each has it's own requirements, and they may line up with technology at differing times or eras.

Lohner-Porsche

Too costly for popular consumption, Lohner utilised the revolutionary drivetrain technology for larger commercial vehicles................ Over 300 Lohner-Porsche vehicles were sold through 1906.
If we branch out our thinking to include some of the flying electric drones and smaller manned craft now coming out (in fan/prop hub), compact and powerful motor and battery development may have crossover into different fields such as automotive.

In my POS of a country, I'd be concerned about damage to this system, either due to road conditions or intentional. But the ZTL brake seems interesting.

That does not appear to deal with mud, or snow ... bumps? ..

1 pot-hole of any significant size, half full of mud and gravel ...

I was hoping that they had removed a cover to show off how it works ... but this appears to be left open? I guess it's OK for racing, on dry smooth pavement.

The representative of Orbis claimed it's submergible, so at least snow and heavy rain are OK. And there is a cover meant to emulate the stock front wheels in order to make it look more integrated to the vehicle. But anyway, I'd like to see it tested in places such as Piauí and Amazonas, with a lot of unpaved roads either too dry or too humid...

It surprises me that exposed gears would survive.

1 small rock. Looks like much damage .. perhaps the motor and gear mounting allows for movement if something is jammed into the gear teeth.

It does not appear that the gears have lubrication, or cooling, or much of anything. Certainly a minimalist design! I like KISS to a certain point, but this seems a bit extreme.
