I just wipe my camera lens with my finger or napkin whenever I'm back there, usually just after putting groceries in the back.

VW hides the camera behind the emblem and it only pops out when needed.

Test Drive: Trading Mirrors for Video Monitors
October 31, 2019 • by Jim Park
https://www.truckinginfo.com/343709/...video-monitors
Quote:
Since Stoneridge is presently the only supplier with an exemption from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration allowing it to operate trucks without conventional external glass mirrors, ignoring the A-pillar-mounted monitors wasn’t an option on this test drive. They were all I had...................

I also learned that Stoneridge currently has MirrorEye systems installed at 14 fleets with an estimated 5 million miles of evaluation testing – and zero reported accidents stemming from the use of the system.

“Drivers respond to MirrorEye the same way they do with automated manual transmissions,” Kirkland told me. “It takes a bit of coaxing to get the veterans to try it, but none of them want to go back to conventional mirrors after they try it.”.......................

The camera lens is hydrophobic — it rejects water. The image on the monitor remain crystal clear while the view outside the window is muddled with rainwater wash.

The window should also be coated with Neverwet or similar nano-particle hydrophobic coating.

I'm guessing the coating is super expensive and perhaps has poor abrasion qualities. Otherwise if it's affordable and can endure weather stripping touching it every time the window goes up and down, then why not?

I wish my hovercraft googles had this coating.

The only downside is that we can't simply turn and look while attempting to pass other vehicle on the road.

My next van

For my 1st van, when I get it, I will make my own sideview cameras, on the roof of the van to reduce glare, legal or not, but to stay legal, I will make tiny sideview mirrors, similar to porsche race cars, but smaller, just to stay legal, even tho they will be for the most part useless lol.

So even smaller than those, as far as I know theres no regulation, that specifies how big they should be, as long as they are not cracked or missing, it should be fine, if anyone knows otherwise please let me know

If you go that small make sure they are convex.

Even with convex l' m told those mirrors are rather worthless.
