This is the D shape on the rigth and second best triangle shape on left. Difference between these two in my tests 0,6-1,0%.
But like I wrote even that can be improved with many tricks and fine tuning. Those can be seen in this video:

In final setup I did not have time to build D shape to the deflectors and they are the triangle shapes in final configuration. Building the Triangles took about 1 hour and the D shape ones would have taken almost triple the time. Plus I did not want to break the best deflectors the D ones which work with the wider tires so they are saved for future testing

Maybe an elongated D shape would be better, an elipse cut in half. A bit like the daihatsu UFE-II

The Nissan Leaf example does have slots around the hub.

I like how the photo from jakobnev shows the curve on that spat following the entire contour of the wheel well opening at the bottom. That's interesting. The spats used to be short little things. That rounded section in front must be doing some interesting stuff with the flow to the inside of that tire.
