This is a personal move, not commercial. The Penske website was where I got the info that I needed to stop at weigh stations. The truck is a 22' diesel and we will be towing my car behind it on a trailer. We are going from Dallas, TX to Asheville, NC on I-40.

Thanks for your help.

Finished Moving

Sorry for reviving an old thread guys, but there's really no better place for me to put this info (the proof is in the pudding as they say). I managed a cumulative MPG of 10.6 over a span of 2404 miles using 231 gallons of diesel. At least 150 of those miles are "in andaround town" (picking up and dropping off stuff), the rest are interstate and highway usage. Wyoming was great crossing as the tailwind pushed my instant MPG up to 25ish steady. Not too terrible for 33,000 lbs of vehicle at 70 MPH. I'll post more later tonight with a pic and more stats.

You give me hope for our move. These are my calculations right now. 1100 miles, 8 mpg, $4.50 gal = 138 gallons, $619 total cost

It is a 20' Penske diesel truck and I will be towing a 2400 lb Corolla on a full car carrier. If we get 10+ mpg we will be severely overestimating our costs (which is very good!)

Mission successful!

We drove a 22' Diesel Penske truck with my 1997 Toyota Corolla (2400 lbs) on a full tow behind it.

We averaged 9.1 mpg at a speed of 60-65 mph. There was a significant elevation change going from Dallas, TX (elevation 600) to Asheville, TX (elevation 2000). We had to cross over mountains at an elevation of over 3000 feet.

Diesel prices cooperated with us and we never paid more than 3.999 /gal.

115.29 gallons
1044.4 miles
454.28 total cost
9.1 avg mpg

The truck had a slight alignment problem (it pulled to one side) which may have cost us some gas mileage.

The other vehicle (2003 Honda Accord EX 4 cyl, 5 speed auto) averaged over 40 mpg with one tank getting 42.1 mpg. This was with modest drafting of the moving truck and was significantly higher than I had budgeted for, saving even more money.

Thank you for your posts EM'ers! The info definitely helped our journey.
