Why use an alternator at all?
Use an old magneto with a modern wide range dc controller then you could current limit allowing your deep cycle to charge and discharge depending on available output.

I gave up on my turbo home built turbo/generator. It was going to be a part of my turbo compound system but the back pressure was to much when the alternator went into higher loads based on my turbo compound calculator.
So I decided to wait for F1 to release the MGUH technology in about 5 years and then just by one.

Agreed.
And although solar has is own challenges to overcome, it is doable.
But as far as the turbonator... I'm still keeping the dream alive way back there somewhere just in case I ever come across something new that might make this feasible.

New member, registered to post here.
Why not use a large RC permanent magnet motor (rated upto +200k rpms), remove the and compressor side of the turbo, and instead, machine a coupler on to join the turbine shaft to the motor. Then pass this through a DC - DC converter to 14.4v to charge the battery.
Maybe this + a controller that only enables the existing alternator to activate whilst braking (to act as a supplement charger)= maximum efficiency.
Maybe try negate some of the increased backpressure/reduced flow casued by an additional turbine by removing a muffler or two, as turbine itself acts as a damper for sound anyway.

Only very large turbo chargers stay under 50,000rpm.

I would focus on or similar alternators used in steam powered generation attached to a couple turbochargers.
Google Wrightspeed. Wrightspeed is building a microturbine generartor range extender for large trucks.
I still have not found anyone reselling one yet. Their website states they do not resell to the public.
Dellta Motorsprts are also playing with the idea calling it mitre microturbine generator

Considering how turbine engines fitted to aircraft work, with their own generators coupled to them (and in some applications an all-electric starter-generator instead of the pneumatic starter separated from the generator which became mainstream in large commercial aircraft), the idea of a turbocharger-driven alternator doesn't seem so unconceivable at all. I'm sure upcoming advances in the usage of materials with greater thermal insulation properties such as ceramic compounds are likely to decrease the possibility of heat damage to the magnets.

I also found MTT Micro Turbine Technology BV that is building a high speed turbine generator for large home or small business use. It seems that there will be many of options soon. I really want to find one as a range extender for an ev pickup truck.
