It's quite complicated to balance everything in order to improve the overall efficiency, there is always some compromise. No wonder nowadays, even with all the resources such as VVT available for 4-stroke engines, manufacturers are putting some effort into transmissions with a higher amount of gears and the CVTs.

Orbital Engine Corp's patents are due to expire or have expired on this, so theres a chance 2-Stroke DI might make a comeback.

Here's a 2022 article:
Aprilia’s Fuel-Injected Two-Stroke Concept

As someone stuck in a newly 3rd world country (South Africa) who has been all over Africa, here's what I think went wrong:

"You want to come here and fit this to my engine, as a test, for free? Sure! "

"you want ME to pay $300 for it!? Uck Foff!!!
I don't care that I'll make the money back in a year! WhereTF am I supposed to find $300!?
Go get the govt or someone to sponsor it for freeeeee!! (Not A chance!)
And BTW I also want $300! ...er... for the time and trouble of fitting it"

ie: 'Pearls before swine' - Just plain broke - No foresight evolved.

Orbital Engines is now AFAIK focusing on the development of some military UAV engines.

Maybe it would make more sense (commercially) to introduce such system in a country where 2-stroke motorcycles have been mostly relegated to leisure, where enthusiasts tend to be more supportive to such experiences. Had some countries such as Colombia never banned the registry of new 2-stroke motorcycles in 2008 IIRC, I'm sure some of those die-hard 2-stroke enthusiasts would rather be OK with direct injection instead of a mandated switch to a 4-stroke.

That there would likely have been a much better business model.
(It does nothing for the worldwide problem mind you; just for bottom lines)

But if Big Oil, knowing that 68% of fuel is burnt overcoming inertia, wants to sell more oil by banning 2-strokes = making vehicles heavier;
then you're 'farting against thunder' with any clean 2-stroke tech.
