Your dad's a smart man. Always, always, always let someone else take that first year or two of depreciation. Back in May 2009, we bought my wife a 2009 Impala that was used and had 7K miles on it but it was GM-certified (extra 12 mo./12K mile warranty). We saved ~$10K and have more warranty than if we'd have bought a new Impala. Automobile depreciation is one of the biggest wealth wasters of middle-class Americans. Make sure you're on the good end of that depreciation.

Voted 31-35 since I'll be in that range in 3 weeks.
25 voters so far and the average is lower than I suspected (35-45 range). This kinda makes me feel old...

I agree completely. New cars are the biggest waste of money.

Yeah, so far the distribution is obliterating my impression of the ecomodder demographic. It's a good sign, actually. Young people taking the initiative to learn about fuel efficiency... There may be hope for our country yet.

I wonder if we are "outliers" in the ecomodders sense, or if it's just that guys our age just don't spend as much time on the internet as the young turks?

I'm still stuck in the hot-rodding/family-wagon period with my Trailblazer SS.
We had to have a truck to pull our camper so I figured if I'm going to have
a truck that gets 15-20 mpg, it might as well be a hot rod too, and there was
no price difference, so why not?

Truth be told, I've always had a dichotic personality on my cars.
I had a '98 Chevy Metro the same time I had a suped up '96 5.7L Impala SS,
and I loved them both for different reasons. Since I live closer to work now
(8 miles), it doesn't make sense to own a Metro anymore (it'd be just taking it away from someone who lives 25+ miles from work).

To appeal to my eco-sense (and because my wife loves landscaping), I bought the manual pickup truck. That way my wife has her hauler and I can
have a vehicle I can ecomod/hypermile and shoot for 30+ mpg.
