Low rpm isn't magic- most low rpm engines are really long stroke so the piston speed ends up comparable to high rpm, short stroke engines.

Hucho says we can get the 12% down to only 2% although it requires elaborate inlet and outlet ducting,the latter being a challenge for production cars which aren't configured for the space necessary...

It is the volts really. If they stay in bounds the amps won't be pulled, as the battery won't overcharge then. So the alternator offers less resistance and you burn less fuel.
