High speed driving clobbers your mpg, so I avoid Interstates as much as I can. I-80 is a necessary evil, because the alternate routes are 2 lane roads where I slow everybody down.
When I went for my 1000 km tank, there was very little highway travel involved - maybe 1 or 2 errand trips across the bridge. I typically get low-mid 40 mpg on highway trips. The rest was bread & butter (55-70 mpg) country road trips to Home Depot, the mall, Costco, Wal-Mart, etc. which balance off the short bad mpg (35-45 mpg) trips to places like the doctor and pharmacy. Needless to say, I walk to the bank, grocery store, veterinarian, barber, and post office.
