There was a Miev at the Mitsu dealership in Fredericksburg used for $10900 with 10k miles.
How much depreciation is that?

Depreciation is only a factor if you're buying the car new just to turn around and sell it used.

If you don't know what you want in a car, then go with the one with the highest resale value. You'll need it, and soon.

It's not the physical collateral damage from a motorcycle impact that's in question: its that the motorcycle/suicidcle rider is irresponsible to his or her dependents. If the rider has none, or only has adult heirs, then ride on! I no longer commute by bicycle for the same reason- the route is unsafe.

As far as the damage a bike will cause a car in an accident? Sure the damage should be less, but I'd rather replace a fender, front clip or total out the car after bumping another car than deal with a torn-out undercarriage after bouncing over a bike (not to mention all the blood and gore that'd need washing off). Killing somebody just because one of you made a minor driving error would really suck.

Sure, the same concept could be stretched to those who avoid the vehicular arms race and drive rusty Metros amongst 40 ton trucks. We live in a relatively free country, so it's a personal judgement call about where to draw the line, but the bottom line is that in an accident, the motorcyclist always loses.

I'm sure you'll both be happy with it. As for myself, for about 1/3 the money, I'd prefer a Tesla drivetrain, battery pack and Supercharger in this:

Have you never even lurked about converting a minivan into some sort of "extended range electric vehicle"?

I'm expecting that in 5 years, automatic emergency braking will be standard in most vehicles. Insurance companies should have lower premiums for these safer cars, which should spur adoption.

I look forward to the day that an accident on the freeway in Portland will be considered highly unusual instead of the current accident every few hours.
