Aside from having to pump the brake to get a good bite, all went well on the ride to Sayre this morning.
I adjusted the hand brake while my son "drove" my car, so that works perfectly now, as well.
Once the brakes are all bled properly, the pedal should feel nice and firm.
Still a good bit of work left to do, but Herbie is coming along nicely.

Christ,
Are you thinking about getting into you own homebrew BioD or a 2 tank wvo system? You have the perfect specimen for that. I have not read through all of your posts yet. Did you get to the body for rust & door handle buttons yet? Or have you just been getting Herbie road ready?
Thanks,
Dave

Lol I've been driving the Golf around while working on it. Not ideal, but necessary.

Filled Herbie up today. Vacuum pump de-vaned at about half tank, and filled from a diff pump at a diff store this time, so no real data from this one, but 56 mpg calc by fill/miles.

56 mpg is awsome! How much you think it weighs now? How much more you think is left to trim?

Loving the updates Christ, makes me feel very lazy! Glad someone else is getting decent mileage out of an old straight D dub engine! (in your case AMAZING mileage)

Was it a local Pa. car? I was looking on ebay at the same era Golf wanted 1500 but bring your own trailer, massive amounts of rust thru everywhere. It would need to be taken apart & mig weld patched. Rear quarters, bottom of doors gone, holes in floor, the VW was from Pontiac Mi.
Any rust concerns w yours?
Are you going to get into running WVO or BioD?
Thanks,
Dave

The only reason I'm even considering it a decent full if because the pump didn't shut off when it should have, so I lost about 2-3 oz of fuel on the ground, and even with that, still got a "best tank".
Next tank should be similar or better.

It has rust, but I don't have any structural concerns, at least yet. Seems merely cosmetic, thus far. More than likely, the body will rot, and I'll buy/build/whatever a streamlined trike, or just find another chassis to swap the diesel into.
Emissions be damned, I can't see how my 60mpg of soot or whatever is any more harmful than your (not you) 15-25mpg of carbon, nitrogen, what have you...
Mine was a ny car, afaik... Haven't done a vin check tho, and no history on it, just a clean title. I got lucky to get it. I still don't think the guy had a clue what it was worth.

Let's save that for 66, shall we? Due time, my friend.
At some point, sure will run bio, probably even wvo... Really like the multi fuels approach, including used lubricant oils. Again, time will tell.
