"Ratings" don't give the full story.
I had a VW Microbus that was rated 1 Ton, and it couldn't do half the work my 1/2 Ton F150 does.

I used to have a 88 toyota pickup that the previous owner drove off a mountain in a suicide atempt. It landed in a tree and smashed the grill and fender and that was it.
those are probably the toughtest trucks ever made.
And I averaged 32mpg with mine. 22r and 5spd.

It's a T1 (T2?) Frank, I doubt it could do half the work a mini-cooper could.
That said there are quite a few pickups that can and do get better mileage while hauling whatever a first tier "full size" pickup can.

As used by the typical American (truck box nearly empty, or completely empty, or used soley for commuting) yes small are more than adequate. But not for big jobs.

Like towing an 18' flatbed with up to 10,000lbs of whatever on it. Wouldn't even dream of hooking that monster on to the Ranger.
And the many occasions where I had the F150 box and even the cab packed with stuff in order to make one trip or even to make multiple trips. Same job with the Ranger would have REQUIRED additional trips, using even more fuel.

<(--- Tows 5,000# with an S-10...
I agree with Frank though... while I preach the "right tool for the job" mentality, I also understand that sometimes, something bigger will make the situation just that little bit more comfortable.
While I'd love to have had something larger than a Dime to tow my Saturn and the 'Ute trailer, it's all I had. Trailer sway was quite an issue (with air shocks) anything over 55 MPH, sometimes less. With a fullsize pickup, that wouldn't have even been noticeable.

Buy a truck for truck things. Buy a car for car things.
