If Isaac has a 300 I-6, he has a F150 full sized truck. A much bigger, heavier, and draggier truck than a Ranger.
If it is getting 15 MPG as is, I'd be surprised. He has to go to war to reach 30 MPG.
BTW, I completely reject the notion of driving 20 MPH under the limit just for FE bragging rights.

The odd thing about the bigger, heavier, draggier trucks is that they tend to have the same payload as the smaller, lighter, less draggy trucks. Outside of lots of heavy towing after the point where even electric trailer brakes don't help, I can't really see 'em as being practical from the pov of cost.

I got 16-17 mpg in my old F-150 I-6 when I babied it. I sold it for $700 and bought my escort. If I'd kept it for a year, Obama would've paid $4500 for it as a clunker. Argh.
I agree with BigDave's ideas.
There is a guy on here with a beat-up orange 1988-ish F250 from SoCal getting really good mpgs.

That orange one is diesel. And he does go sloooooooooow.
"Equal payload ratings" or not (which I doubt) the little trucks can't do the work of the big ones. It's about volume too, and chassis weight and size as well. I have a Ranger AND an F150 and there is NO COMPARISON in the work they can do. The Ranger can brush up against 30 on a very good day. The F150 can brush up against 20 on a very good day. I've even recorded a couple of 21 mpg tanks but usually it's more like 17; the 21's were under exceptional tailwind conditions and should be considered anomalies.

I can baby the ballz off of my Dakota and barely scratch 20. Something to do with 8 cylinders, don't really like gasoline.

Iono, googling turns up a bunch of different payloads for a F-150 depending on options, and on average they're about same as my Toyota. I noticed the same thing with my friend's old Dodge. No appreciable difference in payload. Volume isn't even a deal breaker, since any small truck can take a flat bed that's the same size or larger than a full size pickup bed. There are small one ton trucks too. Like I said before, outside of heavy duty towing I have trouble justifying the cost of a larger truck. My tiny 82 pickup can haul ~1800lbs according to the door placard, which puts it right in the middle of brand spanking new "full size" pickups.

Ford needs to make a truck like this.
Turbo V6 diesel
800+ weight reduction
17" smoothish wheels
4" height drop
3.15 gears
8' bed
detachable kammback (sp)
2wd
Make it for the weekend warrior. Call it the f100.
