I showed this peice of art to my brother who said it would be cooler if it was also an actual boat. True but I'm impressed by just a well made topper.

Thanks. Yeah, it would be kinda cool to have the dual functionality.. Unfortunately I am pretty sure that would mean that sacrifices in design would make it perform poorly for each task.

Thanks. I got the wood from Lowes. It was 2x6 rough cut cedar (1.75x5.75 actual). I then cut that into strips with a table saw and did the beads and coves on a custom router table. Page 2 of this thread has all the details.

As a guy who likes the look of wood, I'm gonna cry when you put fiberglass over this.

It ends up clear, you see the wood but it is strong and waterproof.

Joggernot -- I, like you, would prefer a hand rubbed finish. But this is an exterior application.
I'm the sort that would put it out in the sunlight for a season or two* and let it get a nice silver sheen, then glass it with a matte finish.
What I'd like to see is cedar shingles laid like fish scales. Here's the idea in vinyl or something:
*If that kitchen sink that's been in the carport waiting for refinishing for 2 years is any indication.
