2003 Prius Questions: Battery Replacement, Able to drive without?

Are you able to drive a 2003 Prius with a failing battery pack?
(or will it drive like a regular car)

Has anyone replaced the battery pack on theirs?

(I know toyota will replace for 3k but there are cheaper DIY kits out there)

sorry if this has been posted before
if so please post a link to thread/answer

No, you can not drive a Prius without the pack. You can have it refurbished for $1000-1500. There are a few places that will do it for you.

If you are handy, you can locate the degraded battery "sticks" and replace only those. Often times, balance charging can also restore some of the degraded pack performance.

Go to Priuschat.com and search for balance charging and stick replacement if you are up for doing the work yourself for a couple hundred bucks.

These are the few I googled and found:

2001-2003 Toyota Upgraded HSD pack [HR-01-03-Prius-Upgrade] - $1,699.99 : HybridReVolt: Hybrid Battery Repair

Hybrid Battery Repair - *HybridBatteryRepair.Net

http://greentecauto.com/hybrid-batte...us/1gen-prius/

I don't know the reputation of any of these places though.
