That's a nice rig for sure, but to which extent would it be so easy to match the OP's budget? On a sidenote, maybe its body-on-frame configuration would make it easier to eventually go as far as converting one into some sort of campervan.

To the OP:
For the escape hybrid, there should be a way to remove the viscous coupling. Though I don't know what that would do to longevity of the transmission side connection. Or maybe an electric clutch instead?

Most likely an electric clutch for the 4WD engagement would wear out quicker than the viscous coupling.

Yeah we have to stay in beater territory. The new vehicles are nice but they are too expensive. Always prefer to stay with an older more proven reliable model as well. Thinking this could be a good DD and useful in scca rally cross. (I see you can pulse and glide these like the prius as well)
