Hey all,
Just rented a 2008 Focus for a trip in PA/CT/NY, and did about 400 miles of mixed driving on it, including two 160 mile stretches from PA to CT. Here are the details. I'm pretty happy to have exceeded EPA, just wish I had inflated the tires to max press.
-34.1 mpg for the trip. Car was EPA rated at 33mpg HWY, 24 City. 80% of driving was freeway.
Techniques used:
• It was an auto, but P+G worked fine on it. Normal P+G
• Mild semi drafting where appropriate
• Coasting to stop lights and signs and around corners, anticipating red lights.
• Cycling A/C.
Things I should have done but didn't
• Inflated the tires at the start of the trip. I never touched them.
• Cycled the A/C more. At one point I had two other people in there for a long trip and the A/C was on the whole time
Other circumstances:
• 3 people in the car for a while and lots of bags
• Needed A/C - muggy East Coast summer days and a wedding meant we couldn't be sweaty!
• NY drivers.
