2012 Hyundai Accent revealed: 50 MPG (US) highway rating*

Hyundai just revealed (to North America) the 2012 version of its B-segment Accent at the Montreal Auto Show.

Of interest to EcoModders...

Quote:
Hyundai is also promising segment-leading fuel economy from the little powerhouse, at an average of 6.4 L/100 km city and an eye-popping 4.7 on the highway
For those clinging to the past , those numbers translate to 37 MPG city & 50 MPG hwy in American parlance (and US gallons).

(*) But there are 2 giant disclaimers - thus the asterix in the thread title:

1) "these are preliminary estimated fuel economy numbers" from Hyundai,

and,

2) If they're estimating for the Canadian NRCAN fuel consumption test regimen (which isn't clear from the article), then those figures are more optimistic than the US. EPA figures will be. Canada uncharacteristically did not revise its fuel economy formula in step with the EPA when the US ratings were revised lower for the 2008 model year and up.

Technical tidbits:
  • six-speed automatic transmission
  • most power in its class from a new 1.6-litre, direct-injection four (138 hp)

Marketing tidbit:
  • Hyundai has said in the past that its models with the best fuel economy won't be "marked up", like some other automakers are doing - eg. Ford, with its Fiesta SFE, and GM with its Cruze ECO.

So regardless of the final fuel economy numbers, this is good news. More affordable competition on the efficiency front.

That occurred to me too... the 2012 Aveo/Sonic with 138 hp from the 1.4 turbo, vs. this new Accent.

From a hypermiling perspective, I wonder if the non-turbo 1.6 makes more sense - no potential turbo problems from shutting down the engine frequently / immediately after high load situations.

The 2012 Kia Rio should be the same. Since they are pretty much identical under the hood. Would love to see what happens.

My girlfriend has a 2010 Kia Rio highest mpg so far was 38 almost 39 highway. I believe it's a 1.4L 110hp. Either way I look forward to seeing more cars getting 50+ on not have to be a hybrid to do so

Good for Canada; the US "dumbed ours down" too much.

Looks like a trend in the right direction for a change. I bet the European version gets 60 MPG using an engine that will NEVER be allowed in the US

My next door neighbor just bought a new 2012 Elantra with the six speed auto. It is EPA rated at 40 MPG highway US.

regards

...aw-w-w, the Government is just giving U.S. what Marine Col. Nathan R. Jessep (Jack Nickolson) said in "A FEW GOOD MEN": "...you can't HANDLE the TRUTH!"

...but, it's more likely because the Gov't don't KNOW the TRUTH (wink, wink)!
