Totally rediculous to have such a low final gear in so many late model manual cars. Smells to me like a left wing EPA conspiracy to move more people into the costlier to buy & maintain CVT transmission. It makes absolutely zero sense to me.

Manuals are marketes as sporty, not efficient. Lower gearing is peppier, and higher revs at speed make it sound faster.

Agreed, but with 6 gears to work with those screeching highway RPM's are just not necessary.

A lot of car companies are changing to 6 speeds but the 6th gear is similar ratio to the 5th gear in 5 speeds. E.G the NB Mx5's. The CVT might be more fuel efficient than MT but does that make up for the servicing costs vs the manual trans?
