2018 Mazda3 to Introduce HCCI Engine, Promises 30% Better Fuel Efficiency

I was wondering when someone else would pickup this baton and run with it. The last I heard of was the Chevy Cobalts running around part-time in HCCI mode, but that was many years ago now.

sounds interesting. They have been on my @#$ list for teasing us with a planned diesel offering in the CX-5, only to never release it in the US market. My wife was sold on that idea.

Since Mazda (ford) is picking it up then it actually has a chance of actually going some where.
As opposed to some shadowy group asking for investors so they can build a prototype.

(ford)? Ford only has a 2% stake in Mazda nowadays...

HCCI is great in theory, but challenging to control. It's awesome that they will have this in production...

but there is no way I'm buying one of these until they have a proven track record of reliability.

"Mazda (Ford)"?

Ford lost controlling interest in Mazda about eight years ago, and they now only have a strategic partnership. Mazda is as much "Ford" as it is "Toyota" at this point, and I believe the SkyActiv engine development is strictly done by Mazda, only being developed after it was sold off by Ford.

Mazda did everything BUT making the wankel rotary engine perfect.
In fact, it licensed it, and prevented anyone else to make one, then stopped manufacturing them!

Rotary engines still suffer from a traditional spark plug that does not fit a rotary design, causing fuel leakages from the compression chamber into the exhaust chamber.

We got a mazda 3 with the 6 spd manual, and love it. Overall build quality seems very good, although some of the interior bits feel a bit cheap and plastic. But crawling around underneath, doing oil changes, swapping the winter tires on, I am impressed over and over.

If I drive it nice, I can break 40 mpg.

If they really up the mpg by 30%, we're talking 50 or better if you drive it nice.

The Mazda3 gasoline SkyActiv is pretty efficient already. My 2015 almost-all-highway-driven 2.0L automatic has achieved an average of 43.3 mpg over the 22,000 miles I've owned it so far, as recorded in my Fuelly account. It's been 100% reliable, and fun to drive too. No hardcore hypermiling involved, just smooth and sensible highway miles.

I hope Mazda can boost that by 30%.
