25 year old Audi that got 100 mpg U.K.
Saw this video this morning. A European Audi A2 with an 1.2 Liter 3 cylinder TDi Diesel. Might give you some ideas on building a Max Mileage vehicle.

Steering wheel on the [wrong/right] side? It has an interesting maintenance hatch.
And the contrast with the Nissan Juke?

Nowadays some bureaucrat would label it as "dirty" for having a Diesel engine without DPF and SCR, even if it could be easier to adapt to run on a much more sustainable fuel which could be produced regionally (vegetable oils, eventually having the feedstock grown in brownfields as part of some bioremediation process).
Crash safety requirements would also render it roughly impossible to get something like this road-legal nowadays, even though people are still allowed to kill themselves on a motorcycle...

There's a lot to like about it. It's been on my list of "really cool Cars" for a long time. The Achilles heel really is the transmission; they're supposedly very unreliable, even by Audi standards.
I'd love to see some of the other aero and weight savings techniques used.

That Audi A2 1.2 TDi was seriously ahead of its time. Lightweight aluminum frame, aerodynamic design, and a super-efficient diesel—hard to believe mainstream manufacturers didn’t push further in that direction. With today’s hybrid and EV tech, we could probably hit even better numbers with the right design choices.
