...it's just a matter of where, when, and how strong.

updated: approx relative masses distances
Code:
                                              nearest distance
Earth: 6000000000000000000000000 kg
Moon: 74000000000000000000000 kg 0.0026 a.u.
ELENIN: 6350293180 kg 0.03 a.u
Haley's comet: 220000000000000 kg 0.03 a.u
the gravitational effect is proportional to mass and to the inverse square of distance (it gets weaker quickly as you increase distance)

in other words,
elenin, at its closest, has about 1 / 1165300528691495 the gravitational effect the moon has all the time.

Edit: it would be like someone parked the titanic on the moon for a couple days.

Yes, Japan has a very strong anti-earthquake/tsunami infrastructure, which certainly saved thousands upon thousands of lives in this circumstance.

Anyway, a psychic predicting this two days ago doesn't mean much. Three days ago they had a 7.3 up there and down here we had a 3.5 and 5.X as well, so just a couple days ago everyone already had quakes on their mind.

I'd give odds that every day, somewhere in the world, some "psychic" or other is predicting a great earthquake. But for some reason we never hear from the ones whose predictions don't pan out.

The Prius technical community is fairly small and international in scope. Ken@Japan has been one of the most valued contributors over the years and he OKed sharing this from a private e-mail:

". . .
Myself and our family members are all fine. I was at home in Yokohama city and felt the largest quake then in my life. It is largest disaster in the Japanese history, double impact (quake + Tsunami).
. . ."

Please feel free to share this good news in the usual places.

Glad he's well. Several of my friends in yokohama were quite scared, but luckily kantou didn't bear the brunt of it this time.

The devastation from the earthquake and tidal wave is to much to take in. My thoughts go out to everyone effected.

The Nuclear threat could have long lasting implecations. Let's just hope it's not another Chernobyl. How you think we'll react if there is a meltdown? Lord please, don't let this happen.

The nuclear angle is only a small part of their problems (and hopefully will not be anything like chernobyl).

It is hard to imagine, so check out this video (and please ignore the ignorant comments), it is a simple matter of plate tectonics and living at the wrong place at the wrong time:
