Reports from Japan:

Sendai got blasted, as always. Infrastructure in and around tokyo is basically gone to hell. Who knows how many are dead, several hundred at least. Most of my friends in the tokyo area reacted between expecting to die or just being extremely sick from the continued shaking. Biggest earthquake recorded in japan, even bigger than the big kantou earthquake that decimated tokyo and killed 100k or so people back in the day. Luckily japanese buildings are pretty quake-proof now, but tsunami are another story.

Anyway, that's that I guess.

Good to hear from you, Ben. Are you still in Japan? Whereabouts?

Yep, I live in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto. We got a tsunami warning for Amakusa and Yatsushiro but that's not near me. We didn't really even feel it, even though we've had a few good shakers over the last couple days.

yes, but then she claimed some clairvoyant and other weird stuff too, then complained that no-one listens to her. If she had stuck with the comet theory more folks might listen, though hard to envision a comet having that dramatic effect, do the math. Now I figure she is just nuts in the head.

Not to dismiss the suffering of the injured or the families of those whose relatives are missing or dead, but it does seem that the casualties are quite low for an earthquake (and aftershocks) of such magnitude and the following tsunami. Despite the Richter scale rating system, it seems difficult to compare earthquakes with each other directly; the Kantou earthquake was an 8.2 compared to this one at 8.9 and yet the earlier one was significantly more devastating.

Regardless, I am saddened by the destruction caused and will do what I can to help.

That's pretty bad

Christchurch a short while ago, now this.

You don't need to be a clairvoyant to predict earthquakes around the Pacific rim.
They ARE coming, it's just a matter of where and when.
