98 Civic HX needs engine work, but has parts.

Thanks to sheepdog 44 for telling us about AutoTempest, I found this great-looking HX in Texas, which is currently going for $1,000--one third of what people are asking in Phoenix. It has the engine rebuild kit, so how much would labor cost?

Honda : Civic HX in Honda | eBay Motors

I would rather find something closer--and not broken!

It just depends on what the machine work is or needs couple hundred at most. Just depends on alot. Are valves bent or burnt is the head really the problem? Or are the rings toast? I've seen complete motors on cl for under 500$ that's what i ld do. Just wait you'll find one close.

Wow, I can actually pick that up and swap in my d15b 3 stage and use my ecu and call it a day. If I were you find another d16y5 and swap it in. Before you swap it in do all of the maintenance work. The ones you can't get to because the engine is in the car so right now since its out you do it all. Just make sure the engine is holding compression and everything else should be a breeze.
