I took a few pictures of various setups and such to go on my presentation board. Here are a few of them.
The wind tunnel itself

One of the wings sitting on the car

The car with one of the more ridiculous wings/spoilers on it

The testing equipment for downforce (the red thing is a kitchen scale)

The testing equipment for drag, the black plastic thing under the car is a moveable platform on linear bearings that actuates a lever that pushes on the grey force gauge

Those pictures are yuuuuge; if you resize them they may display better.

I'd be tuft testing the inside of that tunnel. I suspect that fineness ratio applies to the tunnel as well as the vehicle. And the round/square/round transition looks gnarly.

What is the Flowtech 360 in the background used for?

The other wind tunnel is used by kids in an aerodynamic/wing design (for planes) class. It has a way smaller tunnel internals and a rod with an electric motor to change the angle of attack, last I checked, it had a laser printed(?) airfoil in it. It's also attached to a computer that logs data (I've never used it).

I appears that because of the small scale the physical attachment of the spoilers introduces compromises.

Maybe the spoilers themselves are just way too large and thick to be of practical value?

No way would a full scale spoiler be so chunky.

The photos go a long way to explaining the challenges, and why so many were concerned with the "fineness ratio".

Last time I saw something similar spoiler wise was a photo from the Race of LeMons. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just an observation.

I like this a lot. The image title says 'Speedchimp_Mazda' but I'd wager it's a 914.

In any case, it's been turned into one of my favorite body styles, a 'bubble-top coupe'. Maybe a little too fastback, but it's done with simple curves.

It also has interesting wheel wells front and rear, and massive air intake/exhaust in between.

An Ecomodder-worthy air dam:



All the sophisticated features devolve from it being a 787B Replica. I thought all the air intake/exhaust was confined to the sides between the wheelwells (plus the little schnorkels), but it turns out to have a front radiator as well.

It's unfortunate about the full-width roof cage and monoposto seat.

Now I want to see Gary Emory do an 'outlaw 356' 914, in silver.

The link I provided said Mazda Rotary powered, I like it a lot as well.

However I only now notice the center seating position, which makes the full roll cage an even more curious thing. Really fouls it up aerodynamically.

I like using the wing as a non-wing and as an extension of the rear deck which I suspect comes close to filling out the Aero-Template by going longer in lieu of higher at the tail.

EDIT: My best visual estimate.

Well, they were trying to replicate a mid-engine race car, so the 914 makes more sense than a Miata.

I suspect the roll cage is compromised by the rulebook. And the wing is probably active and in 'fast' position.
