I've only seen the M-20 Pobeda Sport, 1950 before, lovely find.

Torpedo-GAZ, based on the Pobieda M-20, had a tubular skeleton in duraluminium, 1951

The above seems to be the same approach taken with the 300 mph Corvette by Luigi Colani in the early 1990's.

It is also the same direction I've taken with my sketches for the year or so.

It looks nearly symmetrical, top to bottom. That would not seem to be taking the ground into account, and would likely end up having a lot of lift?

I am curious if the above car was tilted nose down 4 inches measured at the front wheel if it would perform better.

It does look like it wants to do a loop or 2 in the air before crashing ..

In 1951 ground effects for cars largely weren't known about and what they did know wasn't applied.

Also Russia wasn't known for the flattest or smooth roads.

I am not talking about ground effects (specifically for downforce) - what I am commenting on is the ideal template has a flatter underside for lower drag. The presence of the ground (which is obviously required!) changes the parameters for the underside of the car - the air moves differently near the ground because the ground restricts where it can move.

Having the underside the same profile as the top, is by definition higher drag. And in this case, the other bad side effect is probably a fair bit of lift. Also, the exposed wheels on the Russian car also mean the drag is actually pretty high.

Another point, is in 1938, there was enough aerodynamic knowledge to build this:

So, the rules of low drag aerodynamics were known.

The rules appear to have not been handed out to the Russians, I think they may of been recycling airplane bodies .. or designs. Boris says "In Russia we don't need No stinking flatter underside , We will do it with airplane body"

Doesn't the airfoil have a flatter bottom to create lift? Would the ground reverse that effect?
