Thumbs up Aeromodded Shell marathon VW Golf/ Rabbit Mk1

Hello

Found some pics and info on a 1981 Shell eco marathon VW golf Mk1 diesel, and Formel E road car.

Marathon Golf 1600cc diesel:
-smooth wheel covers
-grille block
-air dam
-roof extension
-side skirts
-aero A pillar covers
-exterior mirrors removed

Formel E 1100cc petrol:
-Front spoiler
-aero A pillar covers
-extra long economy 4th gear
-gear shift indicator
-fuel comsumption gauge (works in 4th gear only)
-high compression 1.1 GG engine

Apparently some Formel E models (not sure if the golf is included) had a stop/ start system.

And from this thread http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...2-12384-5.html Cd & CdA values for the mk1 golf:

Mk1 Cd: 0.42
Mk 1 Cd.A = 0.83

Havent been able to find figures for the Shell marathon or Formel E cars, or which model the 0.42 Cd is attributed to.

Interesting the Mk2 golf which is also pretty much the same shape (but larger) has:
Mk2 Cd: 0.34
Mk 2 Cd.A = 0.70

Probably due to both detail and shape optimisation (think this was in Hucho's book).

May favorite mod is the roof extension. The ever-so-slight slight downward angle to the horizontal section makes sense. The "crisp" edges going down the sides of the hatchback remind me of the crisp edge details on current-gen Prius :

Another interesting detail in the above picture is that it has side skirts, but not flush to the side of the car. From what I can tell they *look* like they are aligned with the inner wall of the tire (look behind front tire in picture).

I think on AeroHead's truck his side skirts start out inside the front tires but flair out to cover the rear tires.

Ok, I also see that on semis with the HUUUGE side skirts.

I wonder if the rear valance on that Golf does anything for aerodynamics. My intuition is that without a full bellypan and the 4ş upslope to the rear, it probably doesn't.

Hucho's table for the Mk 1 Golf reveals a drag reduction from Cd 0.42,to Cd 0.34 when the hatch angle is relaxed from its factory angle,up to the 'Template' line.So the 1st gen Golf/Rabbit could have gone into production @ Cd 0.34.
Today,we've almost caught up to the VW 2000 of 1980.
