New Guy from Wash DC Metro area

Hi, been enjoying the posts here & am looking forward to improving my driving skills. Just purchased the SG 2 & hoping that will help some. Am very pleased with my 05 Corolla, but would like to push the MPG's a bit higher.

Welcome. I grew up just a mile or so from Seven Corners Center next to Falls Church. We probably have some localities in common.

Start a garage page for your Toy and tell us a bit about what's up: long trips or short? What kind of mods you're willing to make or behavioral changes, etc.

I'll tell you right now, behavioral changes have the biggest impact, especially for the investment.

Welcome to the site. It looks like you're already doing pretty good with the Corolla. I'm sure we can help you squeeze a bit more out of it though.

Thanks, yes used to live in Arlington & was able to take the bus to work. Not having to use the car for the daily commute was very nice. There are so many idiots on the road here. Hopefully you have more patient drivers down in TN.

Commute 25 miles each way daily into downtown DC. The evening commute is a bear many day's, but I have gotten used to the stop & go. Don't mind the clutch except on the worst days.

I know the traffic you have to deal with and I owned an 06 Corolla but it was an automatic. I think the mileage you have posted in your garage is great considering the traffic you have to deal with and the winter weather. I lived near Tyson's corner and drove to the Mercedes dealership on 585 North Glebe in Arlington inthe early 1980s.

Step daughters family lives in Ashburn, probably close to yourself.

Welcome aboard.

regards
Mech

Judging by the numbers you're posting, it sounds like you don't have to use the clutch very much at all in "stop & go" traffic -- you're already "playing the accordion" nicely.

What are your goals with the car?

And... welcome to the forum!

If d.r. is on the Beltway you might not need the clutch too much unless people get antsy, then you can get the rippling stop-and-go's. On the 66 things move pretty smoothly west of Tyson's Corner, but as you get closer it's more likely to start packing up.

I missed my ride from school to rowing practice once, school was close to Seven Corners and practice was on the Potomac at Thompson Boat Center. Ride left five minutes ahead of me, I got there five minutes before them...on my bike.

Traffic in DC can be a bear, but if you have an alternative you can sometimes beat it!

Thanks & yes, most stops are usually in downtown DC when the engine is still warming(ouch) Then the next few miles are uphill once into Virginia.(double ouch)

Really amazed at how much you can gain back later on once the engine is warmed if DFCO is maximized in 5-25 mph crawls.

To gain a few more MPG's & so far have had great success with the ScanGauge, grill blocks & pointers read here on this forum. Mileage is up 3-4 MPG already so very pleased.
