Payload of the current models is up to 1.4 ton (3000lbs).

How do you define a truck as being a half ton? If it's rated cargo weight, the pickup (it's just called the pickup in the US) is rated at 1100 lbs, per the owner's manual of my '88. Though I'm sure I've had a good deal more on it at times - 30 years later, it's still a great truck :-)
That is about the same as a Chevy S10. Ford Ranger has a 1300lb - 1800lb rated cargo weight.

The term "half-ton truck" is about 100 years old. Between WW1 and WW2, a half ton truck actually had about 1000lb payload capacity, so they were advertised as such.

Today, the terms are just hanging around and don't actually indicate capacity. Think of it like T shirt sizes. Small = Compact Truck. Medium = Half Ton Truck. Large = 3/4 Ton Truck. XL = 1 Ton Truck. For anything bigger, head over to the "big and tall" section

That's about right, but...

The Model A pickup was considered a ¼ ton vehicle, but was beefed up with additional front and rear springs to add increased load capacity. But the price of the added capacity had it riding like a buckboard, especially over the rough roads of the time.

In my experience deuce-and-a-half trucks are engineered to carry 5 tons.

Raitings are a misnomer a 1985 K-30 1ton in mill spec is 1.25T K-30. K=4x4 30 =1ton ,same weight raiting as a HMMWV 1.25T
U-haul buys ford F450 with F350 cut-a-way van(17'van)and Cab and Chassie pickups (14'truck). This was a tactic to reduce overload damages.

Nowadays there is the 4Runner and the Fortuner, which is more directed to the Asia/Pacific region and 3rd-world countries. Not sure about the extent of parts interchangeability between them, but the Fortuner at least has Diesel options while the 4Runner doesn't.
