What I ended up doing was exactly what Jacob said. I disconnected the wire for the alternator at the connector to the alternator. I found that if I disconnected it there, the gauges wouldn't go out. So, I then hooked it back up and followed the wire to the point where it entered the cabin. From there, I spliced into it for the switch. It works beautifully.
