A nice alternator design would be one that has a clutch system like the aircon that can disconnect when the battery is fully charged. Or connect alternator when foot is off throttle on downhills while in gear. Unfortunately the aircon clutch system draws quite a bit of current, I am unsure how much exactly.
From what I have read up on lead acid batteries they only really start charging at about 13.4V, from my memory. This voltage is dependent on the battery temperature. The float voltage and maximum charge voltage is also dependent on battery temperature. For that reason they put in a temperature sensor in circuit. Changing that sensor's resistance will only slightly vary the charging voltage. Maybe it could be enough if the charge voltage is not too high to reduce alternator load.
