Hi Stubby79
Sorry for the confusion with the names, I am a 78 model myself.
I agree with you. Adding supercapacitors can be done to make the regenerative breaking better, but what do you do with all the extra power. The battery will soon be fully charged. So you need some motor to get the power back to the wheels.
I have already changed most of my lights to LED's, so the battery doesn't need much charging anyway. It is just the charging power that got wasted as gassing that I wanted to stop with this circuit. At the same time it also lowers the alternator power requirement during normal driving.

Extra energh! WOHOOO!
Generate HHO!
Just kidding.
One would need to size the battery according to your driving situation. If you brake a lot, then a smaller battery may suffice as it will get charged a lot. If a lot of highway miles then the batteries would need to be bigger to be able to go longer without using the laternator.
The super capacitors (there are a couple of threads on this forum) are a bank of 6 rated to 15V when combined. They are ~3000F each and they can hold about 3 seconds of cranking power at most.
I think that the capacitor idea was referred to in conjunction with a deep cycle battery. At the end of a brake'less trip, if the battery is too low, it will not start the car. But if you have capacitor bank that may be able to push enough amps to start your car. Or it is very quick and easy to boost up the capacitor so that it is capable of starting your car again.

I'd rather have a starter rope. I trust them.

Nobody is stopping you from doing that Frank. I'd like to see the DIY thread on it.

As of now I have functioning electric starters and conventional batteries. But I've thought about starter ropes for my vehicles- at least the 3 and 4 cyl ones- for years. It would be nice to ditch the battery and the starter, wouldn't it? Would just need a magneto on the non-EFI ones for ignition; for the others a wee battery and charging system for the electronics or maybe a bigger deep cycle battery and plug-in regimen.

So you want a no-battery starter...

Hello Frank Lee,
I think you might find this interesting: Home - Kineteco
Also these guys: Startwell Engineering – Mechanical Starting devices for Diesel Engines from 0.5 to 18 litres
They have applications for many common engines, mostly industrial/agricultural.
Crank up the spring, hit the release, starts engine.
Several years ago I was looking for one to fit a 292 GM or 300 Ford I-6, and I did find it as a viable application, but it looks like it isn't a standard offering anymore.
BTW, great circuit DieselJan. If I understand it right, this circuit does enable "regular" charging if the battery gets below a voltage you set with the correct diodes, as well as the "charge when brake circuit is active"? IE, it's "foolproof" barring a sudden overnight drop in temperature on a barely-above-set-charge-threshold battery.
Does it continue to charge when you sit at idle at a stoplight with your foot on the brake?
Thanks,
-cajunfj40

AutoSpeed - Digital programmable voltage switch
Some thing like this .
Use function #F5 Relay off when voltage between P1 and P2. On at other voltages.. p= parameter/voltage
Use the TPS 0-5v signal to activate the charge mode at any point outside of cruse.
